Nestled in Nakasongola District, 176 kilometers north of Kampala along the Gulu Highway, Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary spans 70 square kilometers of savanna, woodlands, and swamps. Established in 2005 by Rhino Fund Uganda and the Uganda Wildlife Authority, this private reserve is Uganda’s only home to wild rhinos, reintroduced after their extinction in 1983 due to poaching and conflict. Starting with six southern white rhinos, four from Kenya, two from Disney’s Animal Kingdom, the population has grown to 42 as of early 2025, a testament to successful conservation.

Rhino Trekking

The sanctuary’s star attraction is rhino trekking, a 1–2 hour guided walk with expert rangers. Visitors approach these gentle giants on foot, observing them grazing or resting at a safe 6–7-meter distance. Morning (8:00–10:00 AM) or late afternoon (4:00–6:00 PM) treks offer the best sightings, often spotting mothers with calves.

Beyond Rhinos

Ziwa hosts over 40 mammal species, including bushbucks, Uganda kobs, and hippos, plus 300+ bird species like the prehistoric Shoebill. Birdwatching trails weave through diverse habitats, while a sunrise canoe ride on Lugogo Swamp targets the Shoebill amid misty waters. Night walks reveal nocturnal creatures like porcupines, guided by rangers with torches.

Getting There

A 3-hour drive from Kampala on a paved-then-gravel road makes Ziwa an easy stop en route to Murchison Falls National Park (another 2–3 hours). Self-drive in a 4×4 or hire a tour operator; No flights land directly here Pakuba Airstrip (Murchison) is closest.

Where to Stay

Amuka Safari Lodge offers luxury chalets with pool access, while Ziwa Rhino Guesthouse provides budget bandas or camping. On-site dining serves local and international fare.
