Rwenzori Mountains National Park in western Uganda offers global adventurers a variety of hike routes through its “Mountains of the Moon,” a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Spanning 996 square kilometers with peaks up to 5,109 meters, the park’s trails range from multi-day summit expeditions to shorter scenic treks, showcasing glaciers, forests, and surreal alpine flora.

The Central Circuit is the premier route, starting at Nyakalengija (1,615 meters) and looping to Margherita Peak on Mount Stanley, Africa’s third-highest summit. This challenging trek, requiring permits, guides, and porters, crosses bamboo zones, boggy valleys, and a technical glacier ascent with crampons. The Kilembe Trail begins at Kilembe, climbing to Mount Baker (4,842 meters) or Stanley via a southern approach, offering quieter paths and pristine lakes like Kitandara.

For shorter adventures, the Mahoma Loop explores mid-altitude forests and Lake Mahoma, ideal for spotting Rwenzori turacos and enjoying ridge views without summit rigors. All routes, managed by the Uganda Wildlife Authority, start at 8:00 AM from trailheads near Kasese (6-8 hours from Kampala or 1-hour flight).

Dry seasons (June-August and December-February) ensure better footing, though waterproof gear is essential year-round due to frequent rain and cold (0-15°C/32-59°F).

From novice hikes to expert climbs, Rwenzori’s routes deliver an unforgettable alpine odyssey.
