Mount Sabyinyo in Uganda’s Mgahinga Gorilla National Park offers a hiking adventure unlike any other. At 3,645 meters, this jagged volcano known as “Old Man’s Teeth” for its rugged peaks straddles the borders of Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The summit rewards climbers with the rare chance to stand in three countries at once, blending thrill with geographic wonder.
The 8-hour round-trip hike starts at the park headquarters after a morning ranger briefing. The trail ascends through bamboo and Hagenia forests, alive with golden monkeys and colorful Rwenzori turacos. Steep sections feature wooden ladders, adding excitement to the climb. From the third peak, sweeping views of the Virunga range unfold, showcasing the region’s volcanic majesty.
Accessible via Kisoro, a 1 to 2-hour drive from the park or a flight from Entebbe to Kisoro airstrip. Porters can be hired. Dry seasons (June to September and December to February) offer the best conditions, though waterproof clothing is wise due to unpredictable rain.
Mount Sabyinyo’s tri-nation summit and rugged beauty make it a bucket list trek for international travelers seeking adventure and a unique story to tell.
