Once you’ve decided when to visit Uganda, the “Pearl of Africa,” the next step is figuring out how to get there. With its stunning landscapes, rich wildlife, and welcoming culture, Uganda is more accessible than you might think. Whether you’re arriving by air, crossing borders by land, or navigating local travel, here’s what you need to know to plan your journey.

By Air

The easiest and most common way to reach Uganda is by flying into Entebbe International Airport (EBB), located 25 miles from the capital, Kampala. As the country’s primary hub, Entebbe welcomes flights from major airlines like Turkish Airlines, Emirates, Qatar Airways, and Ethiopian Airlines, RwandaAir with Uganda  Airlines now having direct flights to London and Dubai, connecting through cities such as Istanbul, Dubai, Doha, and Addis Ababa. From Europe, North America, or Asia, expect a layover, with total travel time ranging from 12 to 20 hours depending on your departure point. Regional carriers like Kenya Airways and RwandAir also offer direct flights from Nairobi and Kigali, ideal for East African travelers. Upon arrival, taxis, hotel shuttles, or car rentals are available to take you to Kampala or beyond.

By Land

For those already in East Africa, entering Uganda by road is a practical option. The country shares borders with Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, South Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Well-traveled routes include the Malaba or Busia crossings from Kenya, often used by buses and private vehicles from Nairobi. From Rwanda, the Katuna border is a popular entry point, while Tanzania connects via Mutukula. Long distance buses from cities like Nairobi, Kigali, or Dar es Salaam are affordable and reliable, though travel times can stretch from 12 to 24 hours. Ensure your passport and visa are in order, as border processes are straightforward but require proper documentation. You can also cross the border with the use of the National ID or East African passport. Crossing using private vehicles will require the travelers to pay a COMESA fee and Insurance fee for the number of days they’ll be in the country.

Visa and Entry Requirements

Most visitors need a visa to enter Uganda. The e-Visa, available online, is the simplest option to apply in advance, and it’s typically processed within days. Check for uptodate health requirements, like yellow fever vaccination certificates, which are mandatory.
