Murchison Falls National Park, Uganda’s largest game park at 3,840 square kilometers, sprawls across the northwest, where the Victoria Nile plunges through its iconic falls. Known for its 144 mammal species, including four of the “Big Five,” and the dramatic “Devil’s Cauldron,” this park is a top safari destination. While driving from Kampala takes 4–5 hours, flying offers a swift, scenic alternative, landing you near the action in just over an hour. Here’s how to take flight.

Flight Options

Flights depart from Entebbe International Airport (EBB), 46 kilometers from Kampala, or Kajjansi Airfield nearby. Aerolink Uganda and BAR Aviation operate scheduled flights to three airstrips: Pakuba (10 kilometers from Paraa), Bugungu (southern sector), and Chobe (near luxury lodges). The 1–1.5-hour flight, one way, with daily departures typically at 12:00 PM, arriving by 1:00 PM–1:30 PM (times vary with routing). Charters from Kajjansi offer custom schedules for added flexibility.

From Airstrip to Park

Pakuba, the busiest airstrip, is a 30-minute 4×4 transfer to Paraa, the park’s hub, ideal for boat cruises and game drives. Bugungu serves southern lodges and Budongo Forest (1–1.5 hours to Paraa), while Chobe, near Chobe Safari Lodge, suits luxury travelers (1–2 hours to Paraa). Transfers, often arranged by lodges or tour operators. Flying saves hours compared to the 305-kilometer road trip, maximizing your safari time.

Why Fly

Beyond speed, flights offer aerial views of the Nile, savanna, and falls a stunning preview of Murchison’s wild beauty. Dry seasons (June to August, December to February) ensure reliable weather and prime wildlife viewing.
