Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in southwestern Uganda, is renowned for its mountain gorillas, hosting over 500 of the world’s remaining 1,000. Spanning 321 square kilometers of dense, ancient forest, the park is divided into four distinct sectors Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, and Nkuringo each offering unique gorilla trekking experiences. Here’s a guide to these gateways.

Buhoma Sector

Located in the northwest near Kanungu District, Buhoma was Bwindi’s first trekking hub, established in 1993. It hosts four habituated gorilla families, including Mubare, the park’s oldest group. Treks here range from moderate to challenging, winding through lush forest and past waterfalls. As the most developed sector, Buhoma offers a range of accommodations, from luxury lodges to budget camps, making it ideal for first-time visitors seeking accessibility and amenities.

Ruhija Sector

Perched in the east at 2,350 meters, Ruhija is Bwindi’s highest sector, offering cooler climates and stunning views toward the Virunga Mountains. It’s home to three gorilla families, like Bitukura, known for its relaxed demeanor. Treks here are moderately strenuous, traversing bamboo zones and steep ridges. With fewer crowds and mid-range lodging, Ruhija appeals to those craving tranquility and birdwatching. 23 Albertine Rift endemics thrive here.

Rushaga Sector

In the south, near Kisoro District, Rushaga boasts the most gorilla families eight, including Nshongi and Bweza offering the highest permit availability. Treks vary from gentle slopes to tougher climbs, with open vistas of rolling hills. It’s less developed than Buhoma but growing, with solid lodging options. Rushaga also offers gorilla habituation experiences allowing 4-hour visits with semi-habituated groups.

Nkuringo Sector

Southwest-facing and rugged, Nkuringo sits at 2,161 meters, overlooking the Kashasha River Valley. Its three families, like the Nkuringo group, demand steep, arduous treks perfect for fit adventurers. The reward? Breathtaking scenery and fewer visitors. Lodging is limited but cozy, emphasizing an off-the-grid feel.
