Gorilla Trekking

How to Book Gorilla Permits

Step by Step Guide

Booking a gorilla permit is the most important step when planning a gorilla trek in Rwanda or Uganda. Permits are limited. They also sell out fast, especially in high season. Follow this simple guide to secure your spot.

  1. Choose Your Gorilla Trekking Destination

Gorilla trekking is available in two main destinations:

  • Rwanda: Volcanoes National Park
  • Uganda: Bwindi Impenetrable Forest or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Volcanoes National Park

Rwanda offers easier access and shorter travel time. Uganda provides more trekking options and lower prices.

  1. Confirm Your Preferred Trekking Date

Pick your travel dates in advance. Permits can sell out months earlier. Travelers visiting from June to September or December to February should book even earlier.

  1. Check Permit Prices

Prices change depending on the country:

  • Rwanda: USD 1,500 per person
  • Uganda: USD 800 per person

Africans and East African citizens/residents: Discounts apply in law season from November to May. Knowing the price helps you plan your safari budget.

  1. Contact the Official Authority or a Licensed Tour Operator

You can book permits in two ways:

Option A: Book directly

  • Rwanda Development Board (RDB)
  • Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA)

Option B: Book through a tour operator

This is easier. Operators check availability, reserve permits, and plan your full trip from booking other activities, hotels and offer transportation.

  1. Send Your Passport Details

To reserve your permit, you must send:

  • Full name
  • Passport number
  • Nationality
  • Preferred trekking date

Operators and wildlife authorities need these details to secure your permit.

  1. Make the Payment

Once your date is confirmed, you will receive payment instructions.
Pay securely through:

  • Bank transfer
  • Online payment gateway
  • Mobile money (in some cases)

Your permit is reserved only after payment is received.

  1. Receive Permit Confirmation

After payment, you will get a booking confirmation. Keep this email and the permit safe.
Your tour operator will present it at the park office on the trekking day.

  1. Prepare for Your Trek

After securing your permit, plan the rest of your safari:

  • Book accommodation near the park
  • Arrange transport
  • Pack trekking gear
  • Arrive at the park the night before your trek
