The Waterfall Hike in Nyungwe National Park is one of the most scenic and rewarding trails in Rwanda’s largest and most pristine rainforest. Officially known as the Isumo Waterfall Trail, this guided hike leads you deep into the heart of the park through dense jungle, fern-filled gullies, and rich biodiversity, culminating at a stunning 17-meter-high waterfall tucked away in a secluded gorge.

Starting near the Gisakura side of the park, the trail covers approximately 10.6 kilometers round trip and takes around 3 to 4 hours to complete, depending on your pace and how often you stop to take in the views. It’s considered a moderate hike, suitable for most visitors with a reasonable level of fitness. The path winds through tea plantations, montane forest, and bamboo covered slopes, offering incredible opportunities to spot primates, birds, butterflies, and a wide range of plant species along the way.

As you descend into the valley, the sound of rushing water grows louder, building anticipation for the grand reveal. At the base of the trail lies the beautiful Isumo Waterfall, pouring through a narrow opening in the rock face and surrounded by mossy walls and lush vegetation. The cool mist rising from the falls offers a refreshing break, especially after the forest hike. It’s a perfect spot for photos, rest, and reflection, and many visitors describe it as a hidden gem within Nyungwe’s vast wilderness.

The Waterfall Hike is guided and open throughout the year, though it’s best enjoyed during the dry seasons (June to September and December to February) when trails are less slippery. Treks begin at designated starting points near park offices and must be booked in advance through the Rwanda Development Board or with a certified tour operator. Entry fees apply, and a local ranger guide will accompany you throughout the journey to enhance the experience with insights into the forest’s ecology and history.

Combining physical activity, natural beauty, and wildlife viewing, the waterfall hike is an ideal addition to any Nyungwe itinerary. Whether you’re visiting for chimpanzee trekking, the canopy walk, or birdwatching, this trail offers a quieter, more meditative experience that connects you directly with the sights and sounds of Rwanda’s untouched rainforest.
