Tucked away in the lush hills of southwestern Rwanda, Nyungwe National Park is one of Africa’s oldest and most biologically rich rainforests. Spanning over 1,000 square kilometers, Nyungwe is a haven for primates, birds, orchids, and butterflies, making it a top destination for eco-tourists and nature lovers. It is best known for its thriving populations of chimpanzees and other forest-dwelling monkeys, as well as its scenic hiking trails and breathtaking canopy walkway suspended high above the treetops.

Nyungwe National Park is home to 13 species of primates, including chimpanzees, L’Hoest’s monkeys, colobus monkeys, and blue monkeys. The star attraction is the chimpanzee trekking experience, where visitors follow skilled guides deep into the forest to observe these intelligent, social primates in their natural environment. Though sightings are not guaranteed due to the nature of wild animals, the experience is often rewarding and immersive, with early morning treks offering the best chance for an encounter.

Beyond primates, Nyungwe is a paradise for birdwatchers, boasting more than 300 recorded bird species, including dozens of Albertine Rift endemics found nowhere else on Earth. Enthusiasts can hope to spot rare species like the Ruwenzori turaco, Grauer’s swamp warbler, and the dazzling great blue turaco. The forest is also home to over 1,000 plant species and hundreds of species of butterflies, many of which are found only in this part of Africa.

One of Nyungwe’s most unique features is the canopy walkway, a 160 meter suspended bridge that offers an exhilarating perspective of the forest from 70 meters above the ground. Walking across the canopy bridge gives visitors a bird’s-eye view of the treetops, often with chances to spot monkeys and birds that are rarely seen from the forest floor. It is a highlight for photographers and families, and it’s included in several guided trail options within the park.

For active travelers, Nyungwe offers over 130 kilometers of hiking trails, each showcasing a different aspect of the park’s rich ecosystem. Trails like the Igishigishigi, Isumo, and Kamiranzovu Swamp Trail vary in difficulty and length, providing something for everyone from short scenic walks to full-day treks through waterfalls, fern-covered valleys, and bamboo groves.

The park is also culturally significant, bordering communities that maintain traditional knowledge of herbal medicine, crafts, and music. Community-based tourism is encouraged, with guided village walks, tea plantation visits, and local cultural performances available for those who want to connect with the people living alongside this protected landscape.

Nyungwe National Park is accessible by road from Kigali, with a scenic 5 to 6 hour drive through Rwanda’s rolling hills, or via a short domestic flight to Kamembe Airport near Cyangugu. It is often included in longer Rwanda itineraries that also feature Volcanoes National Park for gorilla trekking and Akagera National Park for a classic savannah safari experience.

Whether you’re trekking chimpanzees, walking the canopy bridge, or hiking through misty forests alive with birdsong, Nyungwe offers an unforgettable journey into one of Africa’s mostpristine natural environments. It’s a destination that combines biodiversity, adventure, and conservation in one spectacular location.
