Mount Muhabura, also called Mount Muhavura, is one of the eight volcanoes of the Virunga Mountains. It stands at 4,127 meters and forms part of the border between Rwanda and Uganda. The name “Muhabura” means “the guide” in Kinyarwanda because the volcano is visible from many parts of the region. Wildlife adds interest to the hike. Golden monkeys live in the lower bamboo zones, and many bird species can be seen along the trail. Buffalo and other forest animals sometimes leave tracks near the paths. Although gorillas live in the Virunga region, they are not commonly seen on this trail.
Mount Muhabura hiking is rated difficult because of the steep slopes and high altitude. It requires good physical fitness and preparation. Hikers should carry sturdy boots, warm clothes, rain jackets, gloves, snacks, and plenty of drinking water. Walking sticks are also very useful. The best time to climb is during the dry seasons, from June to September and from December to February. Permits are required and can be arranged through the Rwanda Development Board or Uganda Wildlife Authority, depending on which side you start.
Climbing Mount Muhabura is a challenge but also a great reward.
